My original purpose in becoming a psychologist was to understand how to help children who are hurting. I serve children and adolescents who are struggling with a wide variety of concerns, often trauma, depression, anxiety, or self-injury. Of course, this also involves support and guidance for their parents. I enjoy using this same developmental perspective to help adults who are struggling with the impact their childhood now has on them, for instance addressing codependency, boundaries, or experiences of childhood abuse. It is a joy to see clients discovering and blossoming into who they are created to be.
I have specialized training in infant mental health, early childhood issues, and attachment disorders, so I see very young children and work with both parents and kids of all ages around adoption issues and complex developmental trauma. I am also trained in EMDR, a certain therapy approach particularly suited to addressing negative life events.
Thanks to a master’s degree in theology from Fuller Seminary and 12 years experience at the Meier Clinics, I am skilled at providing spiritually integrated care from a Christian perspective. I am always excited to see clients connecting with God in new ways.
My style is warm, relaxed, positive, and direct. I love what I do and am always seeking what will work even better. I appreciate questions and honest feedback as well as willingness from clients to try new things as we collaborate to create a better life.
Dr. Rivas also provides individual supervision for therapists seeking licensure who seek to learn to work from a developmental perspective with a focus on attachment, trauma, and spiritual integration. She is happy to consult with licensed therapists on individual cases as well.
